                                     "National Tap Dance Day"

National Tap Dance Day was initiated by Carol Vaughn, Nicola Daval, and Linda Christensen - tap dancers and historians in New York.  In 1980, Linda Christensen Discovered that Representative John Conyers of Michigan was responsible for legislation being passed to declare jazz a national treasure, and wanted to know if the same could be done for tap dancing.

Later Christensen discovered that Representative Conyers was told about the  relationship of jazz music and tap dancing by Honi Coles, a master tap dancer, and instructor.  With that information, Representative Conyers, and Senator Al D'Amato of New York enjoyed the art form of tap dancing, and was responsible for getting "National Tap Dance Day" introduced into Legislative by Congress in 1988, and approved in 1989 as May 25th, which is  "Bill Bojangles Robinson" birthday, a master tap dancer.

May of each year is celebrated by dance studios across the nation in honor of National Tap Day Day.  In 1989 they witnessed a Democrat Rep. Conyers, and a Republican Senator D'Amato 'reaching across the aisle to make this legislation happen for the art form which is over a hundred years old -'Tap Dancing'.  As Fayard Nicholas of the "Nicholas Brothers", and Gregory Hines said  "Lets keep all Dancing Alive".
